This summer my husband and I decided to have our second tour of Sicily. It is the most beautiful island with Italy’s best cuisine, wonderful beaches and stunning scenery. Our first stop was the Hotel Villa Carlotta and we fell in love with this delightful Taormina hotel and all of the excellent staff. It surely justifies its current status as one of the top Small Luxury Hotels of the World. But there’s always something new and exciting around the corner and so we set off to our new hotel, more than 50 miles away on a different part of the island. It was very nice but it just didn’t have the magic that makes Carlotta so good. My husband and I looked at each other, made a call to the wonderful Olga at Carlotta and she managed to squeeze us back into a junior suite the next day. And so we cancelled the rest of the tour to be back at one of the best hotels in the world. And it did not disappoint. I have nothing but admiration for Andrea Quartucci and how he has developed a team who provide the ultimate in service: have a look at any of the reviews listed on the Villa Carlotta and every one speaks so highly of the staff. It is something I know 5 star hotels in London or New York would be envious of – and we’ve seen them in action. The Villa Carlotta team is like a great choir, or a Champions League team or the Berlin Philharmonic. Everyone has different roles to play but if they all do it together, at the very top level, then they produce true excellence. In any good hotel you can have great views, the best facilities or the finest food but it’s the people who work in the hotel that really bring it all together. And Mr Quartucci has certainly achieved what others can only dream of. We’d like to personally congratulate Riccardo, the duty manager and his friendly front of house team – Olga, Simona and Nathalie, they are lovely, humorous but ever so efficient and obliging. They will suggest the best restaurants around, (because Mr Quartucci has tested them out himself, anonymously) – and do not miss L’Incontro, just a gentle 10-minute walk away: serves the best fish in town! The reception team encouraged us to see the Opera ‘Cavalleria Rusticana’ in the nearby Greek Amphitheatre, and it was a fantastic experience. Friends of ours in the hotel also went to see Verdi Overtures, and enjoyed it immensely. But if opera or classical music isn’t to your taste, then the reception team can help you choose lots of other activities – trips to the beaches or excursions to Mount Etna or even the sinister Godfather tour! Then there’s the restaurant service team. The breakfasts at Carlotta are one of the best experiences you will have. Linger over it and savour all the freshest Sicilian delicacies – the Carlotta has a couple of great chefs, just check out the photographs! But we’d like to especially commend Mara (what a star), Marco, Alberto and Sheyvyn and all their colleagues who made everyone so welcome and provide such an efficient service. What lovely people they all are. Italians and especially Sicilians are famous the world over for treasuring ‘the family’. At the Villa Carlotta you will truly be made to feel part of Andrea Quartucci’s family. Don’t miss !!
